For nine years, Spelkollektivet has been home to hundreds of indie game developers from all over the world.

  • Games have been built here.
  • Studios have been formed here.
  • Careers have started here.
  • Friendships and companies were born here.

Now, everything is at risk.

The municipality has received new directives requiring them to sell properties they do not operate themselves. That includes the building we call home.

We have this year to purchase it, or see it sold to someone else.

We are not trying to buy a building, we are trying to save a community.

What is Spelkollektivet?

Spelkollektivet is a not-for-profit, community-driven co-living incubator for indie game developers.

Our vision is to create creative spaces that transcend borders. Places where someone can stay for a weekend or for years, with the goal of building games, memories, and lifelong friendships.

  • Developers here live together.
  • They share knowledge and experience.
  • They collaborate across projects.
  • They support and care for one another.

Today, we operate approximately 4 000 square meters across multiple rented buildings. Our facilities include bedrooms, offices, meeting rooms, an audio recording studio, and a gym. Surrounding us is a vast and beautiful forest that provides both calm and inspiration.

See It for Yourself

To truly understand what Spelkollektivet is, we invite you to experience it directly.

A full documentary about Spelkollektivet was made by independent filmmaker Jonathan Duek. It captures the community, the people living here, and the journey we’ve been on. It shows the reality behind the words, the challenges, the creativity, and the lives being built here.

Why Should You Care?

Indie game development is hard.

Studios fail not just because of bad ideas, but because of isolation, burnout and lack of support. Spelkollektivet reduces those risks by providing:

  • Community
  • Stability
  • Shared resources
  • Accountability
  • Inspiration
  • Affordable living

Over the years, we have supported hundreds of developers and teams. Many have started studios, released games, and built careers from within these walls.

If Spelkollektivet shuts down, it is not only a loss for those who already consider it home, or a second home. It is a loss for future developers who have not yet had the chance to come here.

By supporting this campaign, you are not simply funding a building.

You are securing a community.

Our Goal

We need to raise 750 000 SEK (~€68 410, ~$79 025) to secure financing for the purchase of the building.

If we reach this goal:

  • We can secure a loan for the remaining amount.
  • We purchase the building.
  • We secure long-term stability for our community.
  • We begin investing in improvements and future development.

If we do not reach this goal:

  • The building will be sold to someone else and we will likely face eviction.
  • A unique and established indie game development ecosystem disappears.
  • Any money raised will go towards ending this chapter of Spelkollektivet as gently as possible for the people currently residing here.

If we exceed our base goal, we can reduce the size of the loan required to purchase the building. That means lower financial pressure in the years ahead and greater stability for the community.

Any additional funds will be invested directly into long-term improvements that strengthen Spelkollektivet and make the community more sustainable.

Why GoFundMe?

Spelkollektivet was funded out of pocket, without external investors and we want Spelkollektivet to remain a community-driven, not-for-profit initiative. The intent has always been to keep our prices as close as possible to our costs, therefore we don’t already have the money needed today to make this investment.

Seeking private investors could introduce outside interests that do not align with our long-term mission. By turning to our community instead, we can secure the building while preserving our independence.

This approach allows us to continue operating as we do today, but with greater stability and less financial uncertainty.
