Save The Historic Barn Schmid Ranch
Hi my name is Kayla ( Schmid) Brack, and I'm the 7th generation , and ranch foreman here at the almost 140 year old , historic Schmid Ranch.we are a Centennial Colorado Ranch, and a designated county and state Historic Ranch. Our 900 acre ranch is located 12 miles southwest of Telluride, Colorado along county road 60M, and is one of the last surviving multi generation working ranches on the western slope. This historic ranch was established in 1882, on Wilson Mesa below the iconic 14,017 foot Wilson Peak and was inictricably linked with the mining industry with its agricultural production. As the mining around here became extinct, we are still a big big part of the agriculturral industry .In addition, we host over a dozen free community events annually out here such as Telluride Academy, Sheridan Art Foundation Wild West Fest, county 4H members, fourth and fifth graders from Telluride School etc. It has always been a big part of my family's heritage to share our “way of life” from the late 1800s and how we do things today. Although times have changed ,and we have updated a few things, six of our most historic, iconic buildings need immediate stabilization, before they crumble into the ground and history is lost forever ! We have applied for a state historic grant to repair these buildings , but must raise a $270,000 match before November to qualify. We have gotten lots of great people to help me fundraise with barn movie nights, a barn dance , silent auction , and some fall family events on the ranch. But we have only raised $50,000 to date. This is a very special place and has touched so many hearts .Our family works hard every day to maintain this agricultural way of life and irreplaceable historic buildings . We appreciate any donation ( tax deductible through the San Miguel Conservation Foundation) you can give to ensure the ranch honors its history, continues to support the community, and perseveres for another hundred years plus. Thank you so much for your consideration. We, and history, really need your help.
