The Purple House in Oakland has been a radical community hub for activists, travelers, artists, musicians, homeless, youth at-risk, and those in need of nourishment and healing for more than 20 years.
As we usher in a new generation of adults raised in the Purple House, we have come to face serious hardship and financial risk of losing the house; due to out-moded dynamics.
Recently, tenants have suffered abuse and assault from an individual living at Purple House, who was recently arrested and released from jail 12 hours later due to police oversight, and continues to harass and abuse black and brown women and children in the household!
We have a pending restraining order against him and a pending eviction lawsuit. However, due to the Covid-19 lockdown, these court proceedings will not take place until July 2nd. Meanwhile, he has not paid rent (neither have other previous tenants) and we are rapidly running out of funds to pay mortgage and bills.
We cannot afford an eviction lawyer, and have only a couple of months left until we are completely broke.
Some members of the Purple House Board are involved in these tedious proceedings and are willing to chip in what little they have for legal expenses, but it is not enough.
We are asking our community to help save this household from danger and extinction. There are very few community houses left that facilitate shows and house homeless and youth at-risk.
We are asking you to remember Food-Not-Bombs, Berkeley Mardi Gras, the epic punk/fashion/art shows, and many other community happenings that have taken place here.
We want our beautifully diverse group of tenants to continue thriving and providing our community with a safe space.
