Save Our Tree Commemorative Fund

The Whitehall Area Chamber of Commerce raised funds to pay for construction of a sign made from and displaying carvings from limbs salvaged from our community Christmas tree.  In 1928 several gentlemen searched the woods near Whitehall for a tree that would be planted permanently on Main Street.  Previous to that time, a tree was cut each year and disposed of after the holiday.  It was decided that planting a permanent tree was more practical so they began a search for the perfect tree.  This 15 year old Norway Spruce was located, dug out and transported to town by horses and sleigh.   After serving the community for 88 years, the tree was ordered cut down to accommodate highway improvements at the railroad crossing.  Residents and former residents fought to keep the tree without success.  In order to honor our ancestors that worked so hard to provide this tree for our enjoyment for so many years, carvings have been made that will be built into a welcome sign for our community.  The Scandinavian "Velkommen til Whitehall" creates part of a substantially constructed sign that will protect the carvings from the weather and support it from cracking or sagging for years to come.  It will be placed in Whitehall's Fredrickson Park for all to enjoy.  In order to continue this project, donations are needed for the concrete work and landscaping around it.  All funds raised will go toward this project.  The carvings preserve what could be salvaged from the tree so it continues to live on in our hearts.  The larger plan for Fredrickson Park will include a sidewalk connecting to the Claire Street senior housing complex and around the perimeter of the park to encourage residents to get out and walk! As funds are available, benches and picnic tables can be added along with a small shelter and exercise stations.  Donations of any size will be much appreciated! The Save our Tree Group of supporters numbered in the hundreds when efforts were made to prevent the tree from being cut down.  Will you consider supporting this effort to preserve part of Whitehall's history?  For more information, go to our Facebook page at Save Our Tree - Whitehall - Public Group. .
If you have questions about the project, please message us on the Whitehall Area Chamber of Commerce Facebook page or email us at [email redacted]p.     Donations can be made on this GoFundMe link and there are no fees charged except for the typical small credit card processing fee.  Donations can also be made at Royal Credit Union in Whitehall or mailed to the City of Whitehall, P O Box 155, Whitehall, WI 54773.  Please consider helping! Note: While this photo shows a blank slate on the south side of the sign, the Chamber of Commerce has commissioned some artwork by local artists.
