Save our Sequim - No to Opioid MAT in Sequim

This group's goal is to keep our city and its citizens safe, and find the best solutions to approach the growing local drug problem. We believe that the 20 acre outpatient medication assisted opioid addiction treatment center the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe is planning on 9th Street in Sequim, would be a big step in the wrong direction. It is a large scale outpatient program that will give out daily doses of suboxone and methadone, drawing patients from all of Clallam and Jefferson county. Patients will have to endure up to 4 hours of daily shuttle transportation, with no stable living options close to the clinic due to the expensive housing market in Sequim. Medication assisted outpatient programs for opioid addiction have relapse rates of over 90%, due to the lack of supportive care, real psychiatric care for underlying problems like depression or PTSD that drive the addiction, and general lack of counseling. We already have 2 outpatient medication assisted treatment options between Sequim and Port Angeles, with a third facility opening in Port Angeles this summer. Neither of the current places have wait lists for treatment. There is no need for outpatient MAT treatment in our community, that will draw patients from all over the two counties right into the middle of Sequim, adding to the local drug scene and making large profits on the backs of people who need real help.
What our county needs is a REAL inpatient rehab facility with psychiatric care, intensive counseling and a reintegration program afterwards providing housing, in order to get addicts back on their feet. And such a facility would also not belong into the center of a touristy retirement town, that draws much of its economic strength from its appearance and reputation. The last thing we need is the local job market to get any worse. Any rehab facility releases former addicts locally. And no mater how good the facility, relapse rates for opioid addiction are high, resulting in an increase in activity in the local drug scene.
So we fight to prevent the construction of the planned outpatient MAT clinic in Sequim, and we fight to find better solutions for the county's drug problem in more suitable locations.
In order to prevent the Jamestown S'Klallam tribe from going forward with the project, we will have to hire legal council and reach out to as many local citizens as possible. Both of which requires funding. Please consider giving to this cause if you live in Sequim or the surrounding area.
