Breaking Bread Community- a project of Student-Run Emergency Housing Unit of Philadelphia- is the region's ONLY pet-friendly homeless shelter, located in Delaware County, PA- just outside of Philadelphia.

Over the past year, we’ve celebrated extraordinary success—moving more of our residents and their beloved pets into permanent housing than ever before. Your support has made that possible.

But today, we’re facing a crisis.

Last month, we were notified that Delaware County is cutting our funding by 72% for the new fiscal year, starting July 1 in anticipation of State and Federal Government cuts to safety net aid. Government funding cuts have been widespread and affect shelters throughout the county- and indeed throughout the nation. Sadly, some are closing their doors permanently.

We were terrified we might have to do the same.

We’ve secured a temporary funding with the county that allows us to keep our doors open—until April 1, 2026. But here’s the reality:

If we cannot replace the county’s operational funding by then, we will be forced to close.

We are doing everything in our power to prevent that from happening.

Closing Breaking Bread would be a tragic loss for our entire community—not only for our residents, but for the many people who rely on us every day. Beyond providing emergency shelter, we serve as:

One of the county’s official Code Blue and Code Red sites—a literal lifesaver during weather emergencies

A hub for free legal aid, veterinary and healthcare clinics, job training, and educational programs

A compassionate space where anyone experiencing poverty can find resources, dignity, and community.

Breaking Bread has become a lifeline. We have become home.

As the need grows, so does our resolve to provide not just shelter—but dignity, nourishment, and a path forward.
