Save Our Acute Services — A critical moment for our community.
SOAS was formed as a result of the decision of the Western Trust when they withdrew Emergency Surgery from the South-West Acute Hospital (SWAH). Affecting 83,343 people.
We remain a determined, evidence-based community campaign laser focussed on having an emergency surgery workforce in SWAH; a service fit-for-purpose for our rural population.
We are the only hospital in NI without emergency surgery within NHS guidelines when it matters most. We are currently being denied our Human Rights.
Legal challenge.
Legal proceedings have been issued. This legal case is on behalf of SOAS, for the wider public for the SWAH catchment area as we must hold the decision-makers to account.
The downside is that a legal challenge is expensive. We are hoping when we get to court to have costs capped, however we need the legal process – our Judicial Review Leave Hearing is currently scheduled for October in the High Court, Belfast. The estimated costs are £75,000. We will be providing our evidence voluntarily, but the legal team cannot.
Why it matters.
Someday your mum, dad, wife, husband, son or daughter at a critical time will need emergency surgery and it needs to be available where and when these emergencies arise.

The cost of campaigns includes the costs of specialist advice such as our Commissioned Independent Statistical Review, the production of books such as our Roadmap, Statements of Support, and the day-to-day materials we bring to you in public information meetings.
Statements made when we represent vast amounts of consultation responses to the Department of Health and to the Western Trust.
We work as a small group of part-time and full-time volunteers.
This includes investigative work, political meetings, and public facing meetings across our community. We speak to patients and to staff alike, and we work with media across the country.
We cannot do this without you.
Every contribution strengthens our fight, ensures that our community’s voice is heard and that we can secure the sustainable return of emergency surgery to SWAH.
