The county commission in Gainesville have given the Kirby Smith Daughters of the Confederacy 60 days to pay out of pocket to move him to their location or the city will take him down and "scrap" him (similar to what they did in New Orleans). The county has decided to replace it with some form of art that “represents” the whole community.
They need our help and we are starting a nationwide fund drive to help move Old Joe in Gainesville to a respectful place for Veterans. All the proceeds will go to the president of the Gainesville chapter of the Daughter’s of the Confederacy. The president of the Kirby Smith Daughters of the Confederacy, her name is Nansea Markham, pledges her chapter will use the funds to move and restore Old Joe.
INSCRIPTION: In memory of the Confederate dead. They fell for us and for them should fall the tears of a nation's grief.
Help save Old Joe.
