The Heart of Footscray

Nan’s Bakehouse opened in 2021, during one of the toughest times small businesses have faced. While the world was still recovering from COVID, Nan’s opened in Footscray with one clear focus
community first, always.

Footscray was the original home of Nan’s. A second location later opened in Moonee Ponds on Ascot Vale Road, but unfortunately had to close last year. What remains today is the Footscray café the heart and home of Nan’s Bakehouse.

Nan’s has never been just a café.

It’s a place where people feel seen, remembered, and welcome.
Customers are greeted by name.
Locals feel like family.
People from all walks of life know they can walk in and feel safe.

Nan’s Bakehouse has always gone above and beyond to support the local community. This includes quietly helping people who are doing it tough with food or a warm drink when they need it most.

This has never been shared online.
Never done for attention.
Never done for views.
It has always been done from the heart.

Phil, the owner of Nan’s Bakehouse, is more than a café owner. He is a true community leader.

He created the Footscray Village Traders group to help local businesses support one another, share information, and stand together during difficult times. He has been at the forefront of addressing safety concerns, organising council meetings, and advocating for a safer Footscray for everyone.

Because of this, Nan’s Bakehouse has become something rare
a safe haven in an area that has faced ongoing challenges.

If Nan’s Bakehouse is forced to close, it won’t just impact regular customers. It will leave a real hole in the Footscray community.

Many locals and traders openly say Nan’s is one of the lifeblood businesses of the area.

To keep Nan’s Bakehouse open and operating, $35,000 needs to be raised.

This will allow the café to continue trading, support its staff, and keep its doors open to the community that relies on it.

But this is about more than survival.

If Nan’s Bakehouse can continue trading, it allows the next stage of a much bigger mission to begin. A mission that has never been driven by profit, but by people.

The long-term vision is simple
to help even more people in need without profit at the forefront. There is real potential for Nan’s to one day grow its own food and create sustainable ways to feed more people.

Not for recognition.
Not for gain.
But because it’s the right thing to do.
