Save McHenry Township
How it all began...
It started on July 11, 2019 when, in spite of protests from hundreds of residents, three of the five McHenry Township trustees (Bob Anderson, Steve Verr, and Mike Rakestraw), voted to eliminate the township's Senior Express bus service that serves those who are seniors or disabled, effective November 30, 2019. This action infuriated many residents and made it very apparent that these three trustees have no interest in listening to their constituents. But we decided to fight back. On August 5, 2019 we organized hundreds of voters in McHenry Township and held a special electors meeting where we placed a non-binding referendum on the March 2020 ballot to save the buses.
But we still had work to do. We knew that the three trustees were planning on placing a referendum on the November 2020 ballot in an attempt to dissolve McHenry Township. If we allowed this, then they could modify the wording that would appear on the ballot and the order of the vote. But referendum questions can be confusing, and sometimes it is difficult to know exactly what we are being asked to vote for. We suspect that these confusing referendum questions are intentional, and we did not want that to happen in McHenry Township. Although we don’t want the township to be dissolved and we are fairly certain that most of you don’t want to dissolve it either, the referendum was going to be placed on the ballot regardless, so we decided to do a preemptive strike. We circulated petitions and successfully placed a clear and understandable referendum question about township dissolution on the March 2020 ballot. With your help, we can win this fight and save our beautiful township. Referendums cannot be placed on the ballot again for at least 26 months, so the three trustees will have to wait at least 26 months before they can try and dissolve the township again, but before then they will be up for re-election, and we will have the opportunity to vote them out of office.
Our efforts to save McHenry Township costs money, so please help if you can. Donations will be used to pay for things such as yard signs, flyers, posters, postage, printing costs, and attorney fees.
