For over half a century, the Lloyd Center Ice Rink has served as a community anchor in the heart of Portland. Now, the future of this vital, one-of-a-kind facility is on the line.
In early February, Urban Renaissance Group quietly walked back its years-long promise to redevelop the Lloyd Center Mall while maintaining its iconic ice rink.
As a result, a coalition of passionate skaters, parents, and coaches came together around a common goal: protect access to equitable and affordable ice skating in Portland.
The mission of Save Lloyd Ice Coalition (SLIC) is to urge the City of Portland to pause approval of the Lloyd Center redevelopment plan and require preservation of the Lloyd Center Ice Rink, or a binding, permanent, year-round replacement facility of equal or greater quality, before any demolition or irreversible action occurs.
This is a place for youth sports, family recreation, adaptive athletics, and community gathering. Once removed, this type of civic infrastructure cannot be meaningfully replaced through seasonal or temporary alternatives.
We are not opposed to housing or redevelopment. We call for responsible, evidence-based planning that does not permanently eliminate a long-standing public asset without due process, policy alignment, or mitigation.
In just three weeks, we have submitted hundreds of pages of evidence to the Portland Design Commission, delivered hand-made valentines to Mayor Keith Wilson requesting his help, and gathered over 3,500 signatures on our petition.
SLIC is trying to slow down the process to make sure that the community’s voices are heard and to give the city of Portland a chance to do the right thing. SLIC members and generous community donors have contributed thus far, but we’ve exhausted our resources. To continue this fight, there are still more legal fees ahead.
That's where you, our ardent community, can help. By contributing to our fundraiser, you're helping us cut through the red tape to let our beloved rink live to fight another day.
We have a long road ahead of us, but with your support, we can win.
