LIMINAL NEEDS YOUR HELP!
Liminal is a nonprofit cafe and community center that is completely volunteer-run. Everything we offer is donation-only, which means the space and resources are always free for everybody. All sales and donations go directly into keeping the space up and running. We encourage people to pay for our services when they can so that we collectively support those in our communities who can’t pay.
Liminal needs to raise money ASAP to securely change our location so that we don’t have to shut down for good.
We are seeking to acquire a new property with a legalized commercial kitchen, and to negotiate a lease with clauses that provide us adequate legal protection.
OUR THREATENING SITUATION
We’ve come up against some major challenges related to the commercial property we inhabit which are threatening to shut us down for good.
Our property management has refused to allow Liminal to resign a lease, while also encouraging us to stay in the property and keep paying rent. This effectively has taken away all legal protections pertaining to our continued existence on the property.
This refusal to provide us legal protection has allowed them to issue us some specific threats in an effort to protect the interests of the business owner of the AirBnB upstairs, who has a personal relationship to the building owner.
For instance, the property management has verbally communicated an informal noise curfews which does not abide by the business rights listed in Flagstaff city code. In effect, since we no longer have legal protections, a bad review from a client of the AirBnB upstairs could mean the immediate removal of Liminal from the premises.
This is all compounded by the increasing price of rent, which we are severely struggling to keep up with. We would love to drastically increase the amount of revenue we are able to acquire by operating as a full time cafe which serves affordable food to the local community. However, the ongoing threat of our existence on this property, as well as the Flagstaff Building Department’s designation of the property as retail-only, both prevent us from doing so.
Please help us raise money to fix this situation so that we can continue to operate as a valuable community center in Flagstaff. Any money that you can donate will help us immensely.
