The King's Pond Preservation Society is a resident led body focused on opposing Alton Town Council’s ‘offline’ plans for King's Pond. We believe the plans neglect public feeling, are harmful to existing wildlife on site and are a high risk option with no guarantee of success. Known as ‘the jewel in the crown’, we hope to preserve this space for generations to come.
Whilst the society acknowledge the value of chalk stream habitats, such waterways are characterised by extremely pure water. With sewage storm drains, surface water runoff and pollutants from arable land all impacting the River Wey in Alton we do not believe the ambition of a chalk stream is achievable.
We believe it is sacrificing the existing pond for a pipe dream. We believe it will fail and we will lose the pond with all its current benefits for no gain.
Many Altonians are unaware of the plans. We need to raise awareness !!
We want to effectively campaign to save the pond as a large body of open water on the River Wey and to commission specialists to offer us impartial advice where the council have failed to do so.
So far, the funds raised have been used to pay for publicity; flyers and posters. We expect to continue focusing on spreading the word and anything remaining after the decision for the pond's future has been made will go towards enhancing the pond. Funds could also be used for sourcing industry experts to help guide our report writing and who can advise and make recommendations for the pond.
