Jokesters in its two years in Southtown has cemented itself as a cool not always quiet place to go on a crazy First Friday evening or a lazy Sunday for karaoke. This last month has taken a lot from us and has caused a lot of hardship and pain for our local bar owners. I've known Marsha a long time now and she has given us all tons of great memories and stories to look back on. Let her continue that tradition by helping her out when she needs it the most. I know Marsha and she would never ask for a handout. That's why I took it on my self to create this page for her. Please, guys, any Lil or a lot bit helps.
So I just got my hands on Marsha's plea to State Reps to help with her taxes.
My name is Marsha Mahaffey and I own a Comedy Club / Sports bar named, Jokesters 22 Pub N Grub. I am the only female owned Comedy Club in San Antonio and possibly all of Texas. As I am in a primarily male dominated industry, I have had many challenges when I opened my business. My perseverance to help heal others through laughter, and a place they could call home, gave me the determination to fight for my dream. Jokesters 22, named after my loving heavenly Grandma Smith, took three years in the making. As door after door closed this was the beginning of the hardest thing of my life. I finally came across an opportunity and was able to build the courage to take the leap of faith, I had worked so hard for. Moving forward, I am now in my second year of business and the new challenges have not subsided. My first year in business I nearly went bankrupt. I have sacrificed so much with the hope of completely being able to fulfill my dream. You see, the fight inside me, has been driven by the leadership and the role I play in the city as a female Comedy Club/ Bar Owner. I feel as if I fail, I fail the dream for other women to be able to look up to me as someone that can encourage them to see the drive in themselves. My heart breaks for the other businesses and what they're going through and it saddens me after fighting so hard that I too, could possibly lose my business. Unfortunately, my two year TABC renewal happened to fall during the Government shut down, and I was told by the Comptrollers office there would be no help or payment plans offered during this time. I had 30 days to pay my license or I would have to apply for a new one. When I heard about the loans and grants I applied and was hoping to pay several expenses however, these were my priority. Unfortunately, I have applied for the loans and grants and haven't received any help. I desperately ask for your help and consideration in this matter as my business will not reopen if I do not receive the extension or miracle of waiving these fee's.
TABC 2 year renewal of approximately 5,700 be waived, extended payment plan starting the first month after business are allowed to reopen
Mixed Beverage Gross Tax extended payment plan without the 20% down payment in order to qualify for a payment plan
Mix Beverage Sales Tax extended payment plan without the 20% down payment in order to qualify for a payment plan
In conclusion, I turn to you as one of my final motives to being able to continue my business. My passion for my business is an extension of my determination to be a good role model in this city through providing employees and guest with a place they can call home. This is beyond just a business for me, my customers and my staff, and that is why I desperately ask for you help, consideration, anything at all, in this matter. I know your time is valuable and I appreciate it.
