Please help the residents of Hughsonville fund the immediate legal action needed stop the building of a large gas station in the middle of their hamlet and help the Town of Wappinger residents reinstate zoning protections for their neighborhoods.
In March 2019, the Town of Wappinger Town Board unanimously voted to remove protections of having new gas stations built in the Town of Wappinger neighborhoods by removing Zoning Code 240-52, which until then read:
"No gasoline station shall be within 1,000 feet of the boundary line of any residence district or any school, church, park, playground, hospital, public library, institution for dependents or children or any place of public assembly designed for the simultaneous use of 100 persons or more, regardless of the district where either premises are located."
This significant decision to scrap protection for ALL of WAPPINGERS is out of of step with the published Town Comprehensive Plan and is inconsistent with the wishes of the residents. There has been no clear explanation of why this Zoning Code was removed for the whole town, and efforts to have the Town Board address this by reinstating the Code or instituting a moratorium have been ignored and stonewalled.
On July 19, 2021 the Town of Wappinger Planning Board agreed to issue a site approval to have a large Gas Station to be developed at the corner of county road CR 28 and NY State Route 9D. The planning board's decision means that they certify that there are no environmental impacts.
While there are additional approvals required, this is a MAJOR milestone in the process and the residents of Hughsonville are upset and extremely concerned about the negative impacts on their quality of life. All four towns neighboring Wappingers have zoning protections against gas stations being developed within residential neighborhoods.
Thank you for helping us ensure that citizens and residents concerns are heard and addressed by helping to fund the legal actions underway to reverse the actions of the town and the developer. Town of Wappinger residents are thankful but the residents of Hughsonville are very grateful for your help.
