Save Historic Middlebury, Inc. is a A 501c3 non-profit dedicated to preserving historic structures through advocacy, action, and working with local government to enact preservation laws.
Our two pressing efforts are: Saving the Timex Headquarters from demolition, and preserving the 25 acres (former Kelly Farmland) at 1535 Straits Turnpike from being developed as a 171,000 square foot distribution center via our lawsuit against the Department of Transportation given the road is already too dangerous (site of a fatality which we contend will be aggravated by the development)
In Middlebury Connecticut there are no preservation laws, unlike the majority of towns in the state. Our mission is to draft preservation laws to present to town officials, advocate and when needed, take action to save endangered important buildings and structures critical to our history.
Our urgent preservation effort is to preserve the multiple-award winning Timex Headquarters. The building is an architectural marvel of a building, with so many unique features there are too many to share here (see our application to the National Register of Historic Places, in our News Section on the website).
The most amazing feature however is that the building itself is an actual working example of the very product the company makes-the only one in the United States, possibly the world: the building itself is a time-telling device! In the ceiling there is a oculus that trains light onto brass floor markers, so the solstices and equinoxes can be measured throughout the year in the building.
