The Jasper County Historial Society is the proud owner of a Steam Powered Tractor. It is probably our most visible presence in the county, showing up in parades and different exhibition events. We are quite proud of this tractor and put a great deal of effort into keeping it in working condition, all with volunteer labor and donated materials. Taking care of this machine is truly a labor of love.
103 years ago, this Minneapolis Steam Traction Engine, that now belongs to the museum, was built. For years this coal fired, steam powered machine did work that had previously been done with horses. Steam power was one of the major innovations of the industrial age.
The Jasper County Museum was built in 1979 to showcase the history of agriculture and industry in Jasper County Iowa. Steam powerd machines such as this were a large part of the advancements in our history.
Last year the boiler started to develop leaks. When it was examined it was discovered that the interior of the boiler was pitted by 103 years of producing steam. To repair these leaks and prevent new ones from occurring, the entire bottom of the boiler will need to be cut away and replaced. We want to be able to share the Steam Engine with our community for years to come. We need $40,000. to cover the cost of this repair. So, we are asking for your help. We don't want to lose this working piece of Jasper County History. Donations in any amount will be appreciated. Thank you.
