We all know these are 'unprecedented times', but the past 6 months have been especially difficult for the fitness industry. If the first lockdown taught us anything, it's that gyms and fitness studios provide us a healthy outlet, a mental/physical release, and a supportive community; these are safe, essential spaces that we cannot afford to lose. Unfortunately, right now, the group fitness industry is fighting for its life. Asked to close our doors to the public yet again, we cannot do what we set out to do -- we cannot advocate for the physical and mental wellbeing of the public, and continue showing up for our communities if no one is advocating or showing up for us.
So, that is exactly what we are setting out to do every Saturday, as Andrew and I commit to a weekly 20 KM run in support of the fitness industry. Our goal with this initiative is simple, raise awareness and raise financial support for local Toronto gyms that are a staple in our community, from boxing to lifting, spin, and so much more. All funds raised will be split amongst those studios named, to help cover the cost of recent PPE investments and aid in current financial strain, or to be given back to a grassroots program.
Each week we will map out a new route through the city, along with 5K increments that allow others to join in even if they do not want to run the full 20 KM. We are running to show the strength of the fitness community. The only question that remains is, are you joining us?
