Save Haworth Main Street Post Office
We are the (very small) group who are campaigning to save the Post Office on Haworth Main Street. It is under threat of closure at the end of July 2022 when it will be replaced by a Post Office counter in the Co-op half a mile away. Haworth is the home of the Brontë family and its cobbled Main St, the Brontë Parsonage Museum and the wild moors beyond attract visitors from all over the world. There are many businesses on and around Main St who use the Post Office to send parcels to customers all over the world. But Haworth is also home to more than 7000 people. For many elderly residents, a visit to the Post Office is the only time that they get out and talk to another person. Due to its geography, Haworth really needs two Post Offices: the present one on Main St and the new Post Office counter in the Co-op.
We have been working tirelessly on this campaign for nearly a year. Unfortunately, we are now in the last chance saloon. The postmaster has to give notice to his landlord by 29 June if the Post Office really DOES close on 29 July 2022. But we need that last month to continue negotiations with the Post Office bosses. We do not believe that Post Office Ltd have fulfilled their obligation to fully explore all the options and to engage properly with the residents and businesses around Haworth Main Street to find a viable alternative.
The first fund raising effort here raised a wonderful £1643. We used that to send 2,500 post cards to the CEO of the Post Office, manufacture and sell 1500 Christmas cards, create information packs which were sent to all the board directors of the Post Office, and just this month, send a further 1500 post cards again to the CEO of the Post Office. You will see that our Post Office looks much more beautiful than at the start of our campaign in July 2021, but we must reassure you that none of the money you so kindly gave us was used to achieve this: it was provided by a generous anonymous donor.
So we are now fund raising to pay that final month's rent of £430. We know that from your generosity in the past we may well raise more money than this. We promise that any money raised will be used for campaign costs and that any funds left over will go to our local Sue Ryder hospice, Manorlands, which we know is a cause dear to many hearts locally. Please do contribute if you can and thank you very much for your support.
Love, the Haworth Main Street Post Office campaigners x
