Save Lives of Vulnerable Women and Girls in Kenya

We've increased our goal to $3000 to purchase and install 25 refurbished computers that will allow us to teach computer skills and provide basic income for vulnerable women and girls in Kenya. These 25 computers can be used for several shifts so hundreds of women will be served. We also welcome donations of older but lightly used laptops. We can send them to Kenya cheaply via people traveling to the region.
Women and girls are suffering in Kenya during COVID 19--especially those in the sprawling informal settlements and slum areas which lack running water, sanitation and health clinics. Caro (above left) lives in Kibera, the largest informal settlement in Kenya. She faces violence every day. Her husband blames her for not providing food to their family during the pandemic. She was doing menial jobs such as washing clothes for less than $2 a day. But COVID 19 and lock-down means she no longer has clients.
Caro joined DAY Africa this spring and has an aptitude for computers. After being trained, she now works for DAY-Africa’s IT business partner at our Excellence Center to earn a liveable wage. Our IT partner has agreed to expand its contract with us to serve many more women, but we need additional computers now to make this possible.
DAY Africa’s work is dear to my heart since I’ve seen the real and immediate difference they make in women’s lives. I now serve on DAY’s Board with other Rotary Peace Fellow Colleagues and Solomon Odero, the Founder and Director.
With your support we can help many more women like Caro. The women are safe at the center. They receive a good income for their hard work, provide emotional support for each other and receive support services like childcare which allow them to work.
