Help Save Downtown Northbrook
Northbrook is facing a decision that could permanently reshape—and effectively erase much of the commercial heart of our downtown.
A national corporate developer has submitted a formal proposal to redevelop Meadow Plaza with three six-story residential buildings containing approximately 150 condominiums, replacing one of Northbrook's primary downtown shopping areas with a development overwhelmingly dominated by high-density residential use.
This is bigger than one development. It is about what we want the future of downtown Northbrook to be.
Residents have turned out in overwhelming numbers with a remarkably consistent message: we do not support eliminating one of our primary downtown shopping areas and replacing it with three six-story residential buildings.
Northbrook's downtown should remain a place to shop, dine, gather, and do business—not become another high-density residential district. Once this commercial district is rezoned and redeveloped, we will not get it back.
Residents have attended meetings, written elected officials, organized neighbors, and spoken publicly. Yet despite overwhelming opposition to six stories, The developer's formal application has moved forward with three six-story buildings.
Now we need the resources to fight effectively.
The developer has attorneys, engineers, planners, traffic consultants, and other professionals supporting its application. Northbrook residents need professional representation of our own.
Save Downtown Northbrook NFP is raising an initial $300,000 to fund:
- Top-tier legal representation to review and challenge the proposed zoning and development approvals represent residents throughout the process, and pursue litigation or other legal remedies if necessary.
- Independent professional review of traffic, flooding, storm water, infrastructure, planning, and other impacts of the proposed development and the studies submitted in support of it.
- Community-wide organization and advocacy, including mailers, yard signs, public education, communications, and other efforts necessary to keep Northbrook residents informed and engaged.
Once a development of this scale is approved and built, there is no going back. We have one opportunity to get this right.
This is a fight for a downtown worth preserving—one with shopping, restaurants, local businesses, and the character that makes downtown Northbrook a community center rather than simply another high-density residential district.
We have spoken. Now we're organizing.
