Our beloved green space is up for sale - we must act NOW to save it for our community.
Every donation—big or small—brings our community one step closer to owning and preserving this land for future generations.
We invite you to join our campaign to save Daisybank, a 4.13-acre natural space beneath Leckhampton Hill, cherished by the local Cheltenham community. Rich in wildflowers, grassland, juvenile woodlands, natural beauty and wildlife, Daisybank has long been a space for recreational activities including walking, biking, dog walking, foraging, family picnics and sledging. It's more than just a green space – it's a vital connection to nature and heritage. As part of the Cotswolds National Landscape (formerly known as Area of Outstanding National Beauty), it holds immense ecological and recreational significance, but has now been put up for sale by the current landowner and will be sold to the highest bidder. There is a risk of this land being developed, so please help us to protect this habitat and ensure it is preserved for future generations.
About Us.
Daisybank Community Interest Company are a not-for-profit Community Interest Company dedicated to preserving the lower slopes of Leckhampton Hill from development. Our mission is to raise funds to acquire the cherished area known as 'Daisybank', ensuring it remains a natural space for you and future generations to enjoy.
We want to ensure that the community can continue to freely access Daisybank and to protect and preserve this space. Once the community owns this land, we can then get to work in delivering the objectives of the CIC, as outlined below:
- Preserve the rights of way and historic tramway route on Daisybank, connecting the community to the Cotswold escarpment.
- Provide a safe, accessible space for recreation including walking, biking, dog walking, foraging, picnics, and sledging.
- Once purchased, a commitment to conserve and maintain the grassland, natural habitats, and flora and fauna of Daisybank.
- Ensure long-term sustainability, public use, and open land status within the Cotswold National Landscape.
- Promote Daisybank biodiversity with practices that attract and support diverse wildlife and plant species.
HOW WILL IT HELP THE ENVIRONMENT?
Years of neglect have led to habitat decline, but with ownership now possible, we are committed to conserving and enhancing this vital site. Our management plan includes sustainable grazing, scrub clearance, and seasonal mowing to restore biodiversity and ecological health, especially in priority calcareous grassland. We will promote diverse wildlife through habitat improvement, ensure public access, and involve the community in stewardship. This project aligns with Cotswold AONB goals, protecting natural beauty, increasing biodiversity, and offering meaningful public engagement with nature. This is a unique opportunity to secure a valuable landscape for both wildlife and future generations. By acquiring and managing this land, we will not only preserve its unique character but actively enhance its ecological function and community value.
HOW WILL IT PROMOTE ACTIVITIES AND LEISURE WITHIN THE COMMUNITY?
This land offers vital community value by connecting directly to the walking and biking routes of Leckhampton Hill, a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Preserving access, including public rights of way and the historic Daisybank tramway route, ensures continued physical and mental wellbeing through recreation and nature connection. The site also holds historic significance, with a SHINE (Selected Heritage Inventory for Natural England) designation, providing opportunities to engage the community in events that explore its industrial and ecological past. We aim to involve local residents, schools, and ecology groups in educational talks, heritage walks, and biodiversity activities. These events will foster deeper understanding of the site’s environmental and historical importance, strengthen community ties, and encourage stewardship of both this land and the wider Cotswold escarpment.
