Thank you for taking the time to read this.
My name is Jorji and I’m a non-binary Cuban-American , my parents met in Guantanamo Base while they were being held captive for trying to reach the U.S. out of survival, after weeks in the water and months on a military base they started from zero and worked countless jobsuntil their bodies couldn’t work any harder and they were able to get this house in hopes that they could treasure it and pass it down for my families future generations.
It’s been over 20 years and this house has seen multiple generations of my families live and die, my birth included, ridiculous hours worked, countless birthdays. It’s been our home despite multiple hospitalizations of different family members, foreclosure threats, bad legal advice, and enough stories both good and bad that I could go on for hours.
We have witnessed Little Havana be gentrified, homes that used to be a refuge for immigrant families now demolished and in their place luxury apartment buildings not designed for people like us. There are so many greedy hands after the title of our home, so that it too can become a luxury home for someone much wealthier than us.
Between the Covid pandemic and the fight for Black lives, there is so much money and wealth that needs to be redistributed to communities in need of your support- If you have already donated and are able to include us in your next donation, you’d help keep generations of my family housed, and the decades worth of blood, sweat and tears my family has invested will have been worth it.
