Concerned Scouters Form Group to Preserve Historic Camp Krietenstein
Terre Haute, Indiana – March 4, 2025 – A group of dedicated and concerned adult scouters and friends of Scouting have united to form a not-for-profit organization with the mission to purchase and preserve Camp Krietenstein. The camp, which has been a cherished “home” to thousands of scouts and scouters for over 100 years, is currently at risk of being sold by the Crossroads of America Council, headquartered in Indianapolis.
The new organization, which will be incorporated as a 501(c)3 not-for-profit, is committed to maintaining the facility to meet and exceed scouting requirements to assure safety for all. The group also plans to provide diverse, year-round programming to enhance the scouting experience for future generations.
"Camp Krietenstein has played a significant role in the lives of countless scouts and scouters," said Jim Stolt, president of the organization. "We are determined to ensure that this historic camp continues to be a place where young people can learn, grow, develop leadership skills, and create lifelong friends and cherished memories for many more years to come."
In addition to serving the scouting community, the group will make Camp Krietenstein available to non-scouting groups, provided they respect and uphold the basic principles of the scout oath and law. This move is aimed at fostering broader community engagement and making the camp a shared resource.
Camp Krietenstein has been a cornerstone of scouting in the region for over a century. It offers a wide range of outdoor activities and programs designed to teach valuable life skills and promote the values of the scouting movement.
