Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, The Sandstone school was recognized as one of the early Montana historic properties to be worthy of preservation and today still retains an exceptional degree of integrity that strongly conveys its historic appearance and character. As Absarokee grew, the residents recognized the need to provide an education for their children and eventually a school district for Absarokee was created. Little is known about the actual school construction, but it is easy to imagine that the community contributed to much of the labor. The Montana Sandstone Company of Columbus provided the sandstone, which fun fact is the same sandstone used for the Montana State Capital building located in Helena, MT! The Sandstone opened its doors in November 1910 to serve all grades from 1st to 8th. We the people of Absarokee are hoping to keep this history alive for generations to come. This beautiful, prominent building has so much history it would be heartbreaking to see it go so we're asking for your help in #SavingtheSandstone!
