I have lived in the N Taylor Historic District and was part of the process when our neighborhood was designated a Landmark District in 2011. At the time, all homeowners were notified that this change would bring new restrictions to protect our historic homes. We were told that these protections would help prevent demolitions and preserve the unique character of our community for generations to come.

Now, the city is set to approve the demolition of 751 N Taylor Ave—a pre-Civil War era home in museum-quality condition—on February 23. This is happening despite the Landmark District status, and the city claims it cannot stop the demolition. It’s frustrating and confusing, especially when homeowners aren’t even allowed to change the material of their roofs without special permission. How can the city allow the destruction of such an important piece of our history while enforcing strict rules on minor changes?

I am raising funds to cover legal fees. These resources will help me clarify whether the city is acting lawfully and, if necessary, file an injunction to halt the demolition. My goal is not only to save this home, but also to strengthen our local codes so that this doesn’t happen again.
