Save 375 Stuyvesant Avenue from Sale

Freebrook Academy, GrowHouse/ The BLAC Land Trust, and Gumbo Workshop are joining forces to save Dr. Josephine English's legacy from being sold to the highest bidder.

375 Stuyvesant Avenue is a historic mansion that has witnessed generations of Black brilliance, resilience, and community care.

Dr. Josephine English, one of New York’s first Black female gynecologists, always dreamed for this mansion to become a sanctuary of healing, creativity, and hope. Over the years, it has served as a gathering space for elders, artists, entrepreneurs, and youth - a living monument to the spirit of Bed-Stuy.

Today, this legacy is at risk.

The courts have ordered the immediate sale of 375 Stuyvesant Avenue due to a tax lien. If sold on the open market, it could be transformed into yet another commercial venture - erasing decades of community history and displacing the very people who helped build it.

We refuse to let that happen.

Through this campaign, we’re raising funds to:

Pay a legal team to investigate ways to prevent the sale of the property to outside parties.
Stabilize and preserve the building so it remains safe and accessible for community use.

Every dollar brings us closer to protecting this irreplaceable space and transforming it into a model of community stewardship for generations to come.
