Status of Turkey after July 15, 2016:
An average number of 60 people are taken into custody a day with a lack of evidence against any crimes.
After the controversial coup attempt on July 15, 2016,
nearly 2,000 babies had to live behind bars for a certain time
period. Yet, 864 of them are still in prison with their mothers.
Betul Urunga (2) is in jail with her mother since May
2019. Her two older brothers aged 6 and 8 live with their
grandmother.
Since July 15, 2016, nearly 20,000 women including
housewives, teachers, and civil servants have been arrested.
10,285 of these women are still held in jail with no indictment.
Almost 50 women had to give birth to their babies while
they were in jail or under custody.
Within three years, 319 journalists were arrested, some
were sentenced to life. 189 media outlets have been shut
down, more than 1,000 journalists have been forced to
leave the country.
Ahmet Altan’s life sentence was reduced to 10 years and
6 months. Ahmet Boken, an executive of a state TV, was
sentenced to 9 years and 9 months.
Within 3 months after July 15, a total of 3,229 educational
institutions were shut down, 6,021 academics and 33,716
teachers were dismissed without any evidence against them.
Gökhan Açıkkollu, a teacher who had been tortured to death,
was found innocent after 1,5 years and he was reinstated to
his job.
After the coup attempt in 2016, 7,299 doctors were banned
from doing their jobs and 47 hospitals were permanently
shut down.
The number of medical doctors who have been dismissed
from their positions in the universities before completing
their degree for becoming a medical specialist is unknown.
The government requested that 60,000 Turkish citizens be
placed on the Interpol Red Notice. More than 100 men were
abducted by unidentified perpetrators believed to be state
agents. 234,419 passports were revoked.
More than 60,000 people who were unlawfully under
investigation had to flee the country for their lives. A total of
464, including children, died since July 2016.
Hatice Akcabay and her 3 sons drowned in the Evros River
on July 18, 2018, while trying to be free.
200,348 people were dismissed from their jobs under the
Decree-Law or by administrative decisions. Besides 4,463
judges/prosecutors, 1,539 lawyers were prosecuted on charges
of supporting a “terrorist organization”
Fatma Gormez, who was dismissed from her job with Decree
Law and lost her disabled son Berk to cancer, fell to 55 pounds.
She still has the risk of death.
Within a year after the coup, 1,561 non-governmental
organizations were shut down and 159,506 people were arrested.
The total number of ongoing investigations is 224,819.
Businessman and philanthropist Osman Kavala is in prison for
more than two years. He has been accused for financing Gezi
Events which took place 3 years before the 2016 coup attempt.
After the coup attempt on July 16, 2016 in Turkey:
* Health coverage for 50,000 citizens were cancelled.
* 6,565 real estates were confiscated; liens were placed on
213,696 real estates under cautionary judgment.
* 1,075 commercial enterprises were shut down, and
trustees were appointed to 1,251 companies.
* Nearly 250,000 employees, including civil servants, were
persecuted from their positions.
* 301,878 books were destroyed by the state. This number
does not include the books tossed by the people due to fear
of being convicted.
* More than 100,000 applications were filed to the Supreme
Court due to unlawful and ill-treatment.
* 217,971 people were detained and 159,506 of them were
arrested.
* 1,384 people were sentenced between 1-20 years in prison.
* 1,029 people were sentenced to life and 1,198 people
were sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment.
* 618,347 people faced criminal investigation.
* It is estimated that -including family members- as nearly
8,000,000 people have been impacted in some ways, either
by falling victim to facing criminal investigation, or being
dismissed from their work, and for their connection to the
institutions that have been shut down by the government.
And the numbers continue to grow everyday...
