Sanitary Towels for needy ghetto girls

Cost of Menstruation

In Uganda, girls start menstruation between the ages  of 11 and 14.
Estimates suggest that the average woman spends upwards of six years menstruating over the course of her lifetime (Kane, 2015). Studies have also found that girls miss up to 3 of school days each month because of lack of sanitary material.

In Uganda sanitary towels for one girl can cost up to 10% of household income (Averbach et al., 2009). When it comes to the slum areas, where poverty bites harder than a dog, with an average family surviving on a dollar or less a day, the cost of menstruation becomes even more overwhelming.

Disposable sanitary pads are often expensive and so Parents/guardians more often than not must chose between feeding the family and providing ‘other needs’ like period kits. This means that girls have to resort to local alternatives like old and tattered pieces of cloth which are often non-absorbent, quite uncomfortable and unhygienic. Even though sanitary towels are a necessity, many ghetto girls don’t have the luxury of receiving these as so.

This coupled with the poor sanitation in the slum areas leaves many girls in a deplorable situation. Through Rise Ghetto Initiative's Menstrual Purse Program, we help vulnerable ghetto girls with the cost of menstruation by distributing free sanitary material, and enhancing their capacity through through periodic trainings to create sustainable menstrual re-usable sanitary kits.

For My birthday this year, I would like contribute to this cause.
