It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Queen’s University student, Samuel Lowe, Co-founder of the Black Undergraduate Coalition. Sam was deeply loved by his family, friends, and the many communities he was part of. He was generous with his time, deeply committed to the people around him, and someone who believed in bringing people together and helping others feel supported. He gave so much of himself to the communities he cared about, often without seeking recognition for the work he did. In 2024, Sam began laying the groundwork for what would become the Black Undergraduate Coalition and became one of the driving forces behind its growth. Through this work, Sam helped connect 27 Black student associations and more than 500 students across post-secondary institutions in Canada. He understood how a student’s background, location, or financial circumstances could shape the opportunities available to them. He worked tirelessly to make mentorship, community, and support more accessible to Black students across the country. Sam’s impact can be seen in the relationships he built, the communities he connected, and the opportunities that now exist because of his work. For the students who benefited from his efforts, his work will continue to shape their experiences for years to come. As we remember Sam, we are asking our community to honour his life by supporting the organizations that meant so much to him. Funds raised through this campaign will support the continued work of the Black Undergraduate Coalition and Convergence, our three-day annual convention that brings together more than 300 Black students from across the country for mentorship, career opportunities, community, and advocacy support. Your contribution will help ensure that the work Sam cared so deeply about can continue. It will help Black students find community, build meaningful connections, access mentorship, and create opportunities for one another. Any contribution, regardless of size, would mean a great deal to Sam’s family, loved ones, friends, and the communities he dedicated himself to. Sam gave so much of himself to the communities around him. We will remember the person he was, the people he touched, and the community he helped build. Through this campaign, we hope to carry forward the work he began and ensure that his commitment to Black students continues to reach generations to come.
