Safety for Anna and her children

Moshi, Tanzania, at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro:
Anna has been my domestic helper, cooking and cleaning for me and my son for the last 18 months, so that I can carry a workload of 70 to 80 hours per week teaching at an international school here. Anna is in her 40's, quiet, dignified, with three children age 7 to 17... and as I came to find out a few days ago, abused... on a daily basis, beaten by a husband who is a severe alcoholic and who does not provide anything for his family. Every day, she extends her stay at my house so that she can have a bit of peace, until she has to go home to be with her children after school. Sometimes, she takes a nap after her work, since the abusive nights often leave her marked and tired.
This project is to raise enough money to allow Anna to escape from under his roof as soon as possible, to rent a two-bedroom house for herself and her children in a safe, secured gated compound for 6 months and provide a start toward her saving money to buy a small house in her family's village. The rent for 6 months will be about $400, and the small house and land another $2650.
According to the World Health Organization , 41% of women in Tanzania who have ever had partners have been physically abused. Anna does not have recourse to a reliable legal system here in Tanzania: a bribe paid by her husband can derail the long and circuitous process. Nor can she count on support from her family because of the serious problems this will raise between her family and her husband's - causing even more violence.
Anna is a strong woman, self-sufficient and resourceful, who has asked nothing of me in these last 18 months beyond her salary and occasional medical expenses. She needs a hand up, not a handout. My goal is to help one gentle and kind woman who has been so good to me - to make a significant difference to just one woman and her children. Please consider helping.
