Safety Alarms for Asians in NYC

I am starting an initiative to provide free safety alarms for Asian Americans in NYC. I am asking all of you to please help make a tangible difference and do something to #StopAsianHate.
I’m not sure how I can even begin to describe how I’ve been feeling the past few months. Watching daily videos and news stories of our AAPI brothers and sisters get beat up on the street, set on fire, slashed with knives, called racial slurs, have their businesses destroyed, and even murdered—that takes a toll on you. It’s a mixture of debilitating grief, white-hot anger, and shock from the sobering realization of how LITTLE people in this country care about Asian American lives. But it’s also a swelling gratitude for the allies that have shown up, spoken out, and fought for us. But now what?
After the media attention of the Atlanta mass shooting has expired, after #StopAsianHate stops trending, we see hate crimes still happening every single day. We’re left to live with this fear. I feel HELPLESS. I don’t know how to fix this. I’m not a politician or a community organizer. I’m just a native New Yorker who happens to be an Asian-American woman and I’m TIRED of seeing this happening to my community. I just want to do something tangible that serves my community. We need to take care of each other. The fear of walking outside or taking the subway right now is real. And since I can’t legally buy and distribute pepper spray, personal alarms are a great protection when walking outside alone—they emit an ear-piercing loud alarm sound when pulled which discourages attackers and draws attention to you while also notifying bystanders. It’s not perfect, but I feel a little more protected walking down the street at night.
To request a safety alarm, email [email redacted] with your name, who the alarm is for, and mailing address and I’ll ship one to you directly. A portion of the alarms will be donated to senior community centers and pharmacies in Chinatown and Flushing. I will fulfill requests until the donated funds run out!
