Access to clean drinking water is one of the most fundamental conditions for human health, dignity, and development, yet for billions of people around the world it remains an unmet need. While water covers most of the planet, only a small fraction is fresh, safe, and readily available—and even that supply is increasingly strained by population growth, pollution, climate change, and aging infrastructure. The result is a global crisis in which contaminated water spreads disease, forces families—often women and children—to spend hours each day collecting water, and traps communities in cycles of poverty.
Ensuring reliable access to safe drinking water is therefore not only a public health priority but also a question of equity, human rights, and sustainable development, making it essential to examine the barriers that prevent access and the pathways that could bring safe water within reach for all.
