As Marcus Garvey once said, “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin & culture is like a tree without roots.”

Although I’ve grown up with a strong sense of family, often being reminded that “blood is thicker than water”- there was something amiss as I traversed the vast terrain from adolescence to young adulthood and beyond. I became more aware of my searching and grasping for more, as built-in systems of oppression seemed to separate me and many other African Americans from our ancestral lineages at every turn.

Even some of our own people….convinced that the ancient ways left behind in the old land were better off there and only belonged to the wicked or crazy bushman/woman who had inherited such a “state of being.” And sometimes, the resistance was rather subtle, hovering over the unspoken as opposed to what was actually vocalized.

The road to embracing my ancient ancestral lineage has been long and windy, as I have courted many other paths and traditions that have ultimately led me back into the loving arms of my own.

I have recently learned that I come from the Fulani people, a nomadic tribe of herders that traveled down from northern Africa and have since settled in various parts of the motherland.



THE DREAM

My dream is to return to Mama Africa, the sacred cradle of creation and home of my ancestors. I can only imagine the depth and breath of how it might feel to touch the ground, smell the earth and walk in the footsteps of those who have come before me. My prayer is to do this with pride and humility.


THE OPPORTUNITY

I have this AMAZing opportunity to experience the magic and medicine of Kemet, otherwise known as ancient Egypt, this February of 2020 under the guidance and tutelage of my teacher Queen Afua, author of the book Sacred Woman and African American elder whose healing work is steeped in the Kemetic tradition. Last year, I had the privilege of studying under Queen for 3 months during her Sacred Woman Rights of Passage training which felt like a homecoming.



To honor the 20th Anniversary of the publishing of her book, she has invited alumnae on this sacred journey with her where we will continue to learn the culture and its healing ways while being directly immersed in the birthplace of the Kemetic tradition.


THE TRIP

Our trip includes visits to the ancient archeological sites (pyramids, temples, tombs, and more) as we move between Cairo, Luxor and Aswan.

We will also be taking a cruise along the Nile River!

There are so many gems involved on this journey that it will be documented for all to see in the aftermath.
