For many years now, I've been gathering donations around the holidays to purchase warm outdoor gear for the homeless wherever I happen to live (currently Port Townsend, WA). This includes high quality merino wool hiking socks, jackets, hats, gloves, and sleeping bags that I hand out personally. Freezing temperatures will arrive soon, so this effort is urgently needed.
I have learned that showing compassion with no ulterior motive or institutional directive is a powerful act of kindness that touches people deeply. When I approach those in need, I treat them with the same cordiality and dignity I would anyone else because I believe that the first step to rehabilitating and reincorporating the homeless into the community is providing enough comfort and compassion to give them hope, and enough attention to let them know they are not invisible or abandoned. Often, recipients ask what they can do for me and my response is always the same. I ask them to find a neglected area and pick up trash, and they are always happy to do so.
If you are not in a position to donate to this campaign, I would really appreciate shares on social media. If you know me personally, please say so in your share as it makes it more likely that your friends will trust the campaign and donate, especially if you say a little something about how you've participated in the past and why you think it's special or important. Honestly, receiving praise for this effort is a little awkward because in my view it is quite easy compared to the day-to-day obligations we all must contend with, and donors play a huge role in making it possible. Gratitude, however, is always appreciated. If you can't afford to give or would rather support another cause, I encourage you to take action yourself in helping those less fortunate and bringing a little more kindness into the world. It doesn't have to be anything extraordinary. Most of us are busy, but I think we can all find a little time to lend an extra hand or to donate here and there.
I use donations wisely. Every cent I receive goes towards purchasing the gear. I buy jackets and socks at Costco and Campmor, which offer the highest quality for the money, and I purchase Coleman sleeping bags online that are rated to 0-25 degrees as well as thick fleece hats and gloves (provided enough money is raised).
I can assure you, your gift to this cause will have a immensely positive impact as compared to the financial sacrifice of your donation. It is not uncommon for me to find someone after a difficult night and for them to be brought to tears knowing they will be able to stay warm for the foreseeable future. In other words, what is small to you is huge to them.
Approximate prices of gear are below to help inform your donation. Receipts for purchases and a balance sheet will be posted in updates to verify proper use of funds.
Sleeping Bags - $60-$80 (most likely to save a life)
Jackets - $25-$60
Thermal socks - $16 (4 pair)
Gloves - $15-$20/pair
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Jesse Hoffmann
