Help Food Co-op in Sierra County New Mexico Raise Funds

Tax deductible
Help Prickly Pear Food Co-op achieve our ultimate goal of opening a brick-and-mortar store in the heart of Sierra County, downtown Truth or Consequences! Your donations will go to a fund that will be used to advance us towards the goal of having our own storefront via rent and renovations. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a store that featured a healthy selection of all local and organic foods to purchase while supporting our New Mexico farmers, ranchers, and growers? Wouldn't it be even better if the community owned that store? Please help make this dream come true! ☺

Other Donations:
We welcome donations other than monetary means as well, and we are in need! If you are fortunate enough to have a space for the Prickly Pear Food Co-op storefront that you would be willing to donate or rent at a special rate while we get up and running, please contact us! Volunteer renovation/labor is also welcome (once we acquire a space, of course!).

Farmers, Ranchers, Growers:
If you would like to connect with the Co-op to sell your goods, please reach out, we would love to support you and our community by providing healthy local foods!

Membership is open and $20 per year to be an owner of this cooperative – please connect with us on Facebook or our website to become a member/owner or join our community!

Why Support Prickly Pear Food Co-op?
Building a resilient local food network is an important community service. Not only do Co-ops create economic strength and foster connections within small, rural communities, but local food networks with a particular dedication to selling organic, regeneratively grown foods provide much-needed opportunities for healthful grocery shopping, as well as outlets for local farmers and agricultural producers to sell their goods. We at Prickly Pear Food Co-op work tirelessly to offer foods primarily sourced from a closed-loop food supply chain within the state of NM, not only because we deeply believe in supporting our local farmers and producers but because we feel that this will be the most secure way to obtain food if larger supply networks ever falter or fail.

Your local Sierra County food co-op exists purely through the willpower of many unpaid volunteers, as well as one contracted project manager who receives a very modest monthly stipend. All of PPFC’s profits are used to support very basic expenses like paying taxes and licenses, purchasing more food, investing in a retail refrigerator, and reinvesting funds into making the co-op more accessible. Our board members and project manager donate dozens of hours of their time every month (and often their own money) to keep operations running smoothly. We do this because we are passionate about the positive impact we feel a local, healthy food network run by cooperative values can have on our beloved, often challenged rural community of Sierra County.

We sincerely hope that your engagement with this fundraiser can help us take the next steps to expand our food co-op. We eventually envision PPFC as not just a healthy grocery store option, but a community and educational hub that will hold workshops on nutrition and regenerative and organic farming, as well as a valuable outlet for our local Sierra County ranchers and farmers to sell their goods. Please help us do what is needed to keep your local food co-op healthy and growing!

Although earmarked specifically for Prickly Pear Food Co-op, your donation will be distributed through The Bountiful Alliance, our nonprofit umbrella organization, under Friends of the Food Co-op, and will be tax deductible! Thank you so much for your support and investment in our community.

Exciting News:
November of 2024, the Co-op applied for Healthy Food Financing Fund grant – a grant aimed at helping food and agricultural enterprises grow, raise, process, aggregate, distribute, and sell local, fresh, healthy food through expanded retail and institutional in-state market channels in rural and underserved communities. We will know if we are awarded in January or February of 2025. This grant does not cover things like site rents or purchase, which is why we need your support!
