Running for The Lake Clinic Cambodia
I have never run a marathon in my life.
In just over 30 days, I will be running a marathon for the people of Cambodia.
One year ago I spent five months working with The Lake Clinic Cambodia.
The Lake Clinic-Cambodia is a Cambodian registered Non-Government Organization dedicated to providing medical care and health education to villages and communities located in remote and isolated regions of the Tonle Sap Lake area.
The Tonle Sap Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, and around fifteen times the surface area of London during wet season.
The lake serves as home to some of the poorest and most remote villages in Cambodia, serving over 1 million people.
The majority of families rely on subsistence fishing for survival and the average family income is $2.50 per day.
During my time there, I worked and lived on floating clinics. I worked with the local doctors, learnt some of the native language and treated the very underprivileged.
I saw common conditions such as diabetes, but also witnessed life-threatening trauma, dehydration, malnutrition, infectious diseases and abuse.
Children went to school on boats. People lived in tin houses measuring around 6mx6m. They drank and bathed in the contaminated lake water. They travelled on boats to see us for treatment. The lake gave them life, but also ill-health.
The experience out there changed me. I started to value what I had back in the UK. Clean water. Free reliable healthcare. A garden. Good education. All things I once took for granted.
Over the last few years the lake has been affected by severe droughts. This has affected livestock, travel and health of the population.
I was meant to volunteer this year. Flight tickets were all booked. Unfortunately the pandemic has ruined my plans.
Therefore, I have opted to help my running and raising money for this amazing charity.
I would be extremely grateful for any amount donated.
Some daily costs:
- $12 is the Average Cost per Patient Consultation and Treatment
- $1,000 is the Average Cost of a Week of Missions. Which Includes 2 trips of 3 days each.
- $100 for Fire Safety Equipment for each clinic
- $10 for Minor Surgery Sets
Thanking you in advance.
