Running a Marathon for Golden Gloves

Me and Sam are running the Manchester Marathon on 19th April, to raise money for Golden Gloves, a boxing club that has been a cornerstone of the Liverpool 8 community for decades.

Golden Gloves was founded in 1947 by World War Two special forces veteran Dougie Pomford. Today the gym is run by coach Wayne ( my dad) and is based on Lodge Lane, right in the heart of one of Liverpool’s most diverse and multicultural communities.

The club is much more than just a boxing gym. It is a safe hub for local children, many of whom come from low-income families in the L8 area. The gym provides a positive environment, structure and support, and has been recognised by Liverpool City Council and Merseyside Police for its work with disadvantaged and often disengaged young people who may otherwise be at risk of being drawn into county line gangs.

For many people who attend, the gym feels like one big family. It’s a place where young people and adults alike feel safe, supported and welcomed. Boxing is not just about sport — it helps build confidence, discipline and resilience, and can have a hugely positive impact on mental health and wellbeing.

When the team took over the current building it was completely run down and derelict. With grants, funding and huge support from the local community, it has been transformed into a vibrant space dedicated to sport, health and wellbeing. With bills increasing and grants becoming much harder to secure since Covid, the gym is currently just about keeping afloat, so every bit of support truly makes a difference.

Everyone involved in running the gym gives their time voluntarily, because they are passionate about supporting the community. The funds raised will go directly towards essential equipment and helping cover rent costs, ensuring the space can continue to operate and support local young people and families.

To support this amazing work, I’ve decided to challenge myself by running a marathon. It’s something I’ve never done before — and honestly I am super scared, but also really excited to push myself for such a great cause.

Every donation will help Golden Gloves continue providing opportunities, safe spaces and support for the L8 community.

Thank you so much for your support — it really means a lot!
