Earlier this year, on a blisteringly hot Sunday, my life and the life of a large community of people were shaken up by something totally unexpected.
My father Stan went for a walk early in the morning and did not return. We lost him to suicide, and it took us completely by surprise.
There was no foreshadowing or warning signs that alerted us that he was struggling, one minute he was here and then he wasn't.
The reason for this fundraiser is that at least in my mind, it is important that out of this tragic and shocking hardship we harness something positive and good.
That's why on Sunday 1st of February I will be running a 60km ultramarathon to raise awareness for men's mental health and to support Movember.
The number 60 is symbolic as every minute one man dies from suicide globally, 60 every hour.
It's my hope that by raising awareness for this cause, at least one person who is struggling will be inspired to take action in battling their mental health challenges. Maintaining good mental health is a lifelong discipline, I see it as similar to exercising, eating well, being kind to others.... it's a consistent effort over time that compounds.
However, I think the hardest part, like any journey, is knocking over the first domino to get things going.
The Event
We’re turning this into a community day where others can join me in running, whether it's for the full 60km distance, or even 5km or a few laps of the athletics track.
It will be a relaxed, open event where anyone can join in.
Also, feel free to come along for some food, games, and good company.
