I’ve changed my mileage promise to make sure for the people who are donating, I’m working hard on my end!! Every $25= 1 Mile
Hey there, my name is Mimi Smith. For those of you who don’t know me, or even those of you who do, here is my story:
Running has always been a passion of mine. I ran cross country and track at Wake Forest University for all 4 years until I graduated in 2019. Currently, I am a student in Duke’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program. We are about to be on semester break where I will be practicing proper social distancing alone in my apartment down here in Durham, NC. This morning, I saw a story on Instagram about a man who ran 100 miles to try to raise money for healthcare workers and local businesses in NYC as they continue to battle COVID-19. I thought to myself: “man I wish I could make more of a difference for all those who are struggling in my community”. I then proceeded to go for my daily run and it hit me. What's stopping me from using my running to raise money and make a difference?
Every person in the United States has been affected by this pandemic in one way or another. Health care providers are on the front lines of the battlefield, being overwhelmed and even risking their lives to save those infected with COVID-19. Nonessential business such restaurants have been closing their doors and laying off their staff. Specifically, down here in North Carolina, 200,000 unemployment claims have been filed since March 16th alone.
I want to make a positive impact in my community. The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina is a nonprofit organization that works hard to end hunger within local North Carolina Communities. They are ranked in the top 15 Food Banks in America and have been working hard to address the increasing needs of those affected by COVID-19. This includes not only senior citizens, but also children and their families who are losing daily school meals they rely on due to schools closing.
My Goal for this upcoming week, Monday March 30th to Sunday April 5th, is to do what I do best: Run. For every 100 dollars raised, I will run 1 mile. My goal is to raise $5,000. Any amount you are willing to donate will make a difference! Thank you so much for you time!
