My name is Mohammed Al-Fayoumi, and I am writing to you from the ruins of Gaza. Before this war, I was a father, a provider, and a man with a home that held my family’s dreams. Today, I am a survivor trying to gather the shattered pieces of a life that was torn apart.
I have lost more than 150 members of my extended family, including my father and my uncles. I was arbitrarily detained, taken away from my wife and children, and subjected to months of unimaginable physical and psychological torture. I entered detention as a healthy man; I came out having lost 40kg of my body weight and suffering from severe nerve damage, losing sensation in parts of my body.
We have lost everything: our home, my health, my livelihood, and our loved ones. Today, my wife (Rima), our three sons (Omar, Amir, and Mo'men), and I live in a tent amidst the rubble, facing cold, hunger, and a total lack of medical care.
