The Nanny Blanket Drive is an initiative started in 2007 when my coworker was transporting an elderly woman to a publicly funded nursing home after a several-month stay in a regional hospital. The patient expressed her fears of change and being alone. While many would consider this transport a "run of the mill" call, the interaction between the elderly patient and my coworker sparked feelings of desire to help others in this position. As a result, the Nanny Blanket Drive was started.

This initiative is a time to spread joy over the winter holiday season. Every year on Christmas Eve, my coworkers and their families travel to regional hospitals where they distribute blankets to those who are unable to be home during the holidays. To date, over 3000 blankets have been distributed. While the goal of the Nanny Blanket Drive is to distribute blankets, the impact goes far beyond the blanket exchange. Volunteers share stories, laughs, and even some tears with patients in the hospital, bringing joy to those who may not have anyone to come and visit or call them.

I entered this career because I yearned to make an impact in my community. During the last 3.5 years working as a paramedic, I can attest to the impact a simple conversation can have on a person's day. During school, I learned that people may not always remember the things you do or the words you say, but they will always remember the way you make them feel. I have carried this mantra with me throughout my career thus far. Hearing my coworker's story about why she began the Nanny Blanket Drive, I was moved. When she provided me with the opportunity to take over the drive, I said yes without hesitation. I need all of your help to make this year a success!
