The best things in life happen unexpectedly. The best stories begin with “and all of a sudden …”
Sunday March 5th started out like any other. We planned a family day at the children’s museum with our 10.5 month old soon to be son- who’s adoption was set to be finalized on Wednesday March 8th after coming into our lives at 3 days old. Among the screams and shrieks of laughter and joy I heard my cell phone ring and saw it was our social worker. “Chelsea! Oh great you answered! Is James with you? Everything is fine, but your going to want to sit down for this. About an hour ago, Birth Mom of your soon to be son called the agency. She gave birth yesterday to a healthy baby boy- 7 lb 9 oz 19.5” and would like you both to parent! I know this is unexpected as neither of you were “waiting” but the baby is being discharged tomorrow around lunch. Because your home study is still current, you would only need the $30k (as opposed to $45k) but we would need that money at the hospital before discharge. I can give you 1.5 hr to talk it over with James, just let me know what you decide!”
After hanging up, the world around us stood still and was silent. Were we really being blessed THIS BIG? After 3 years of infertility treatments the last 11 months had brought us a fixer upper home we would raise our future children in, had been placed with our oldest, was finalizing his adoption and now a second baby! A son! We had agreed to start the process again after our oldest 2nd birthday and we’re planning to go for a daughter. Was this really happening?!? What do we do? How do we fund it? Could we afford parent 2 children under 1? With 2 sons under 1, there are few hand me downs available. It’s double cribs, car seats, formula, diapers, high chairs etc. and we had given away all the gender specific clothing!
After talking it over and consulting with our mothers, we called our social worker back saying we were on our way! We had generously been loaned the money from 2 separate family members until we could get our footing.
On Monday March 6th we met our future son Jackson David Alexander. While we were feeling 100 different emotions, the moment we saw him it just made sense. This is what was supposed to happen. We were meant to be right here, right now despite not having the rest of it figured out. We would move mountains if needed.
We know that raising children takes a village! Any assistance you can offer wither it be a coffee, diapers, time, dinner or assistance in adoption and legal fees ahead is greatly appreciated!
