Rotaract-Aplica! Latin American Scholars (RALAS)

Donation protected
In the spirit of "Service above Self," the Rotaract Club of Georgetown University in partnership with Aplica! is raising CAD $14,000 to develop a project dedicated to assist low-income students from Latin America who are leaders in their communities and wish to pursue their undergraduate studies at top universities in the United States and Canada. The money will serve to catapult a small-scale initiative into a truly world-changing project.

The project

By way of a partnership between Aplica! and the Rotaract Club of Georgetown University, this project will select five low-income senior high school students (or recent graduates) from Latin America who have demonstrated leadership in their community. The selected students will receive expert university admissions advising in the application process for 5-10 universities in the United States and Canada, including a partial subsidy to cover their application fees, with a focus on helping them obtain full scholarships at these institutions.

This project aims to select students who would not otherwise have the financial resources and guidance to apply to these universities, and thus not have access to a high-quality education abroad. We are looking for students who fit the following criteria: come from low-income families or marginalized communities, have shown leadership skills and positively impacted their communities, and have a strong purpose in changing the world.

While Aplica! will select the candidates and conduct the advising, the Rotaract Club of Georgetown University will assist with outreach, planning, assistance, and support both during the selection period as well as during the advising process, a 10-month endeavor.

In order to make this project viable, we need your help! Our goal is to raise CAD $14,000.

Aplica!

As Brazilian women who have thrived through international education opportunities, Aplica! co-founders Vanessa and Luciana understand the power of making quality education accessible to underprivileged communities, especially those in Latin America. Based in Vancouver, Canada as of 2018, Aplica! is a socially responsible business that aligns itself with three UN Sustainability Goals: Quality Education (4), Gender Equality (5), and Reduced Inequalities (10). In fact, 20% of our proceeds from professional advising services go to our scholarship programs. Last year, in the spirit of our commitment to female empowerment and leadership, we launched the Girls Gone Global (GGG) scholarship, wherein two Brazilian girls became the recipients of our advising services at no cost to their families. The results couldn’t be more satisfying: our GGG scholar Renata Hoh was admitted to Dartmouth College with 100% financial aid and inducted to the King Scholars program, which is committed to providing funding and mentorship to students who want to improve education in developing countries. In this video, Renata talks about her experience with the program: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wERbmjX3MthW-x1LjLfoU9HN6sFm6f4q/view?usp=sharing. Our other GGG scholar, Érika Nasser, was admitted to the most selective and innovative institution in the US: Minerva schools at KGI!

Aplica! is not just another advising company. By providing individualized guidance to Brazilian and other Latin American students applying to university in Canada or the United States, we strive to fulfill our mission to create future global leaders who will have a real impact in making our world a better place. Our results speak to our commitment to this mission - to date, we have achieved a 95% success rate among students, with 89% of them receiving scholarships ranging from 40-100%. At Aplica, our work is about helping each student access their fullest potential and ignite their fire for change, guiding them in developing their strengths and values along the way.

Rotaract Club of Georgetown University

The Rotaract Club at Georgetown University  works throughout the semester to develop sustainable national and international projects that will create a lasting impact, such as the Rotaract-Aplica! Latin American Scholars (RALAS) fellowship.  Most recently, the club organized the Peace and Conflict Resolution Conference, which gathered 200 attendees, 20 volunteers, and 19 speakers, including the director of the Peace Corps, a senior advisor of the World Bank, the ambassador of Kosovo in the United States, and many other world-renowned speakers. Check out more about the conference here: https://rotaract4.wixsite.com/conference2019.
By working locally to create global impact, Rotaract clubs bring together youth from the ages of 18-30 to exchange ideas with leaders in the community, develop leadership and professional skills, and take action through service. From big cities to rural villages, Rotaract is changing communities like yours.
