We're fundraising to buy Rosie (6) a safe sleep bed, ready for when her brand-new bedroom and wet room are completed – yay!

Rosie has a rare genetic condition called 1p36 Deletion Syndrome. She cannot walk or talk, has no awareness of danger, and has the cognitive understanding of around a 9-month-old baby. She relies on us for every aspect of her care.

Sadly, Kent is currently the only county that does not provide safe sleep beds for children with needs like Rosie's.

We initially applied through a charity to have a bed funded and, after months of waiting, were told that unfortunately their funding pot had run out for the rest of the year. While it was disappointing, it means we're now trying to make this happen ourselves.

Following an assessment, Kent's Occupational Therapy team determined that a low, open toddler bed would be suitable for Rosie. However, we simply don't feel this is safe. You wouldn't leave a 9-month-old baby to sleep in an open toddler bed, so we struggle to understand why this would be considered appropriate for Rosie, whose understanding of danger is the same.

Rosie wakes every single night, usually between 2am and 4am, and often stays awake for a while. An open bed would allow her to access her surroundings while we're asleep, putting her at risk of injury. A safe sleep bed would give her the protection she needs while allowing us the reassurance that she is safe throughout the night.

The total cost of the bed is £929. Every pound donated will bring us one step closer to giving Rosie the safe sleeping environment she deserves.
