Root Causes WellNest Housing Support Program

The Root Causes WellNest Housing Support Program is looking for donations to go directly to assisting Durham community members who have experienced homelessness with moving into their new place, furnishing their home, and helping with rent/utilities. As COVID-19 continues to affect the most vulnerable folks in our community, housing affordability and security has become even more of a pressing issue. Since WellNest began in 2020, we have been able to offer longitudinal tenancy support to 7 newly housed community members as well as help with move-ins and furnishing the new homes of 6 additional people, we are receiving more and more referrals and do not currently have the financial capacity to fully support these folks in the way that we would like to. We really would not like to turn away anyone that is in need of help, so any donations would be much appreciated! The WellNest Housing Support Program is a student-led program from Duke University School of Medicine that connects students to community members with a history of homelessness that recently transitioned into housing to assist them with the initial move-in process, help purchase items for their home, provide them with support in accessing the necessary community resources, and develop a longitudinal support plan to best fit the patient’s needs. The program also provides a series of educational sessions on housing and health, including trauma-informed care, home safety, and affordable housing. Through this program, we hope to make a positive impact for folks who have experienced housing insecurity as well as allow students in healthcare an opportunity to engage with our local community in a meaningful way.
