Ronald Macdonald House Edinburgh

Kev, Kate, Cillian and Shay will be taking part in the Kilt Walk in Edinburgh on Sunday 18th September. We are raising money in aid of Ronald McDonald House Charities Edinburgh who provide home from home accommodation for families with Children being treated at The Royal Hospital for Sick Children.

On June 12th 2022 our son Shay , after having a sore tummy at home for no more than a few hours, deteriorated very quickly. He was admitted to Edinburgh Sick Kids hospital and diagnosed with Sepsis upon arrival. In the following hours he became extremely ill and by midnight was in septic shock and in intensive care fighting for his life.

The trauma that we as a family went through that evening and through the night is hard to describe and even harder to re-live.

Within 12 hours of Shay being in the critical care unit at Edinburgh Sick kids hospital Kev and I were approached and told by the critical care staff that Ronald Macdonald House had a room for us to stay in for as long as we wanted, just a short walk from Shay’s bedside. At this very moment it was everything we needed. We stayed there for 22 days in total whilst Shay fought this terrible illness and was healthy enough to leave the hospital.

Our gratitude to RMHC during this time is immeasurable. We simply don’t know what we would’ve done without them. We received a warm bed, fresh sheets and towels, a bath, a shower, fridge, living areas, huge kitchens to cook a dinner, a laundry room to wash our clothes, a games room and a nice friendly environment so our older son Cillian could come visit, even an extra bed so Cillian could stay at weekends so we could be a family. The charity and the amazing staff think of everything.

The services and support we received helped us sp so much as a family and undoubtedly helped Shay’s recovery throughout our stay.

As an independent charity Ronald Macdonald House rely on donations from donors, fundraisers and volunteers each year in order to keep families close to their sick children. They keep families together ❤️
