For those of you who don’t know our journey here it goes. August 16, 2019 Sara was in a serious car accident while traveling for work. She was 25 wks 1 day pregnant. She broke her sternum and right wrist (still broken to this day despite one surgery ...another to go). What no one realized that day or for several weeks to follow baby Romy was injured also.
At our 32 week OB visit they discovered Romy was microcephalic aka his head had stopped growing-it remains much smaller than it should be. On Oct 14 Sara had an MRI to visualize exactly what was wrong with Romy. That day we were offered a late term medical abortion due to the severity of his injuries, but we knew God wasn’t going to give us more than we could handle so we moved forward with giving him whatever life he could have.
Romys skull was caught by the seatbelt when the car spun causing him to have multiple strokes. He had a bleeding stroke that took away most of his frontal lobe and then ischemic strokes in multiple areas in his brain leaving him with large cysts where brain matter should be. This is called cystic encephalomacia. He has a fully functional brain stem which allows him to be awake, eat, sleep, breath, etc.
We were told he’d begin to seize at birth and die moments later. Well God is bigger than any of that and he’s still here with us. He does have seizures, but he’s on medicine. He does have so many deficits and more pop up daily. But he’s happy and sweet and here with us.
His skull will most likely have to be operated on as he grows bc his brain isn’t there enough to help it grow like it should. We got our feeding tube this past Friday bc he’s more and more lethargic during the day and not feeding.
The doctors believe he is blind and will have CP (cerebral palsy). We don’t know exactly what the future holds. The neurosurgeon states he’s “never seen someone with this level of brain damage that’s alive.” So God is doing an amazing work in our little boy but it also means we have no real idea of what the future will hold.
Romy and his family have constant doctor’s appointments and several recent hospital stays that all add up to what insurance alone cannot cover. With Sara not working, the financial burden is becoming more than what can be paid off in years of payments.
Every little bit helps and anything you can spare will be appreciated. Thank you somuch in advance. This family is so deserving and has no idea I’m even doing this.
