The Rogers Family

Donation protected
If you know Glenn Rogers, you probably know that he tends to be a pretty private guy. He’s strong and independent, and he would rather help anyone else out than to ask for help for himself. He’s the kind of friend who would give you the shirt off his back, who checks in on old friends, and remembers crazy stories about things he did in the 60s and 70s, even if he can’t remember why he walked into the kitchen. He’s the kind of husband who was supportive and loving, who always said that Sheila made him into the man he could be, and who would silently fix things when she did some ridiculous things as her physical and mental health deteriorated. He’s the kind of dad who still keeps photos in his wallet and does everything he can to give his kids comfort even when he’s crying inside. He’s the kind of parent and spouse I hope to be.

But, he, and the three kids, need our help.

Sheila lost her battle with multiple myeloma on July 23, 2022. She beat breast cancer, skin cancer, and a traumatic brain injury from a motorcycle accident in 2012. The entire family is absolutely heartbroken over this devastating loss. Sheila was the most loving and devoted mother and grandmother you could imagine. She was fiercely protective, and yet soft and loving. She was truly one in a million.

Glenn and Sheila had been raising three of their grandchildren, Autumn, Marley, and Marcus, since they were given permanent guardianship in April 2018. They’ve always been loving, devoted parents and grandparents. Together, they had already raised five kids, who are now all adults (with a decade age gap between the third and fourth kids, making it almost like raising two generations already!). Then, they decided to raise their grandchildren, because they could never allow them to have to go into foster care.

Glenn has been battling cancer since 2004. He has both metastatic bladder and stage IV lung cancer, and he beat skin cancer. He also had open heart surgery for a congenital defect in 2008, and has suffered with a permanently fractured spine since 1981.

The kids are bright, funny, kinds, and lovable and have overcome a lot of difficulties in their short lives. The girls are both in high school and have their futures to think about— college, technical school, military…They’re really exploring their possibilities, and also worrying about how they could pay for their educations later. They both want to work part time jobs and help out with household expenses, but Glenn would never allow that. They can work, as long as their grades don’t suffer, but his rule is that half goes into their own savings and the other half is for spending if they want or need it. They have been picked on and bullied due to their family situation (because kids can be cruel), but they’ve managed to keep their sense of humor. Marcus is in middle school and is on an IEP. He has some processing and cognitive delays and has been through a lot of therapies through the school district. He is one of the most loving and caring boys you could imagine.

But, there are a lot of things we can’t give them— like as many extra curricular activities as they’d like, family vacations, a car for the girls…far overdue redecorating of their bedrooms to reflect their current styles…

The house is in dire need of upgrades. The kitchen floor has been just the plywood subfloor for years. The windows, doors, and skylights need repair and updating, the chimney needs cleaning and upkeep, the heating system needs updating, the pool liner needs replacing, the screen house needs new screens… The list goes on. Glenn and Sheila used to do most of this themselves, but they haven’t been well enough, nor had the money to do it, for several years now. So, it has been put off much longer than it should have.

Any donations to help Glenn and the kids would be greatly appreciated. If you are unable to donate, please keep them all in your prayers, and continue to keep in touch.
