Rocco’s emergency trip to sick kids
Donation protected
Rocco was born August 31st 2018. He had an uncomplicated delivery, and was taken home after 24hrs and life was good. Fast forward 5
days to September 5th, 2018, Rocco randomly projectile vomited BRIGHT green. This wasn't ok, this wasn't normal baby "spit up".
So off we went to the hospital where we got the best care from the peaditrican. Thank God the paediatrician didn't just chalk it up to "reflux" as many times it can often mimic and be misdiagnosed as. Unfortunately, the tests he needed could not be done here so he sent them to sick kids. At sick kids they did an ultrasound + upper Gl, and they diagnosed it as malrotation with volvulus. Rocco’s mother, Christina, and father, Frank had to hand over their baby. He was in the OR for nearly FOUR hours.
The surgeon finally came out and said he was very lucky, they didn't have to remove any of his intestine because his intestines were twisting and untwisting. They spent 2.5 weeks at sick kids with PICC lines, TPN, NG tubes, the whole shebang! Malrotation is serious, it can be fatal if not caught right away.
Fast forward 4 years later,
We are preparing and setting up to throw Rocco the best scooby doo 4th birthday party that he was so excited for!
The night before his birthday party - August 27th, 2022 - he started vomiting again. Panic sets in, and Rocco is rushed to Sault Area hospital where they do a X-ray and find air pockets and pneumonia. He continued to vomit every time he tried to drink. They started an IV and did bloodwork.
The doctors contacted Sick kids who said he needs to come immediately due to his history. Rocco and Christina were then flown to London sick kids.
Rocco’s mom just started a new nursing job to be able to spend more time with her kids, and therefore doesn’t have any sick time accumulated. Rocco’s dad is on his way to be with them.
Rocco is currently undergoing tests and investigations at Sick kids and may need another surgery, any contributions are greatly appreciated as we are not sure how long his stay will be.
